South Korea plans teen social media restrictions

The nominee to lead South Korea's broadcast and media regulatory commission told parliament on Tuesday that imposing restrictions on social media use for teenagers would be a priority, framing it as a necessary measure to protect young people.

Kim Jong-cheol stated during his confirmation hearing that a core mission of the Korea Communications Commission is to ensure the public can "engage in communication in a safe and free environment and in an orderly manner."

When directly questioned about whether the government should consider age-based social media limits similar to those recently enacted in Australia, Kim responded unequivocally: "I believe we have to, of course."

"I believe protecting young people in that aspect is an important and key goal and I intend to pursue the job with that in mind," he added.

The remarks align with a growing global trend. Australia earlier this month became the first country to institute a ban on social media for children under 16. Several other nations are now contemplating similar measures amid rising concerns about the negative impacts of social platforms on youth mental health and safety.
