Cho detailed an alleged scheme, dating to October 2023 and led by Yoon and his defence minister, to suspend parliament and install an emergency body. "To create justification for declaring martial law, they tried to lure North Korea into mounting an armed aggression, but failed," Cho said. The team also accuses Yoon of ordering a covert drone operation to inflame tensions before conspiring to brand opponents as anti-state forces.
MARTIAL LAW DECLARATION
Parliament, controlled by the opposing Democratic Party, voided Yoon's December 3 decree within hours and later impeached him. Yoon, now on trial for insurrection, claims he acted within his powers to counter parliamentary obstruction. His wife faces a separate corruption probe.
A prosecution spokesperson suggested political pressure from his wife's bribery scandal may have compelled Yoon, though she wasn't implicated in the plot. The spokesperson added that the timing likely aimed to exploit the post-U.S. election transition, and a spy chief was set to travel to Washington to stifle objections.
