A bus carrying school children home from a trip plunged off a cliff in northern Colombia on Sunday, killing 17 people and injuring 20 others, according to the local governor.
Andrés Julián, the governor of Antioquia department, confirmed the death toll in a statement Sunday night. Earlier in the day, he had posted on the social media platform X that the bus was traveling from the Caribbean town of Tolú to the city of Medellín.
Governor Julián explained that the students from the Antioqueño High School were returning from a beach trip where they had been celebrating their graduation.
"It's very hard news for the entire community during the time of December," the governor said Sunday night, reflecting on the tragedy during the holiday season.
